Unit 3: Dick and Carey Design Model
Overview
The Dick and Carey Model is a framework used in instructional design when developing an effective learning experience that is centered on both the learner and the outcome. It was developed in 1978 by Walter Dick and Lou Carey.
Mini-course
The Dick and Carey Model can be utilized in multiple learning environments, especially higher education and corporate. However, because in my mini-course is centered around a rapidly changing travel industry, is heavy reliant on technology, internet resources, and a global travel community, I don't this is the best model to utilize for my course.
Four Essential Components
The learning environment is essential in shaping the learning experience.
Learning Context
The delivery of the content is as important as the content itself.
Content Delivery
Learners need to be active participants in their learning (behaviors, styles, motivations)
Learners Behavior
IDs must utilize appropriate instructional design strategies that align with learning context, content, and learner behaviors.

Strengths & Limitations
Strengths
Limitations
Clear objectives
Cohesive alignment between the objectives and instructional components.
Evaluations
Instructional designers gather feedback to improve each implementation.
Analysis
This framework consists of over emphasis on analyzing each step.
Resource intensive
This model requires access to multiple resources (SMEs, assessment tools, technology).
Timely
Because of the multistep process when developing courses, the entire process can be lengthy.
Analysis
Analysis can be timely and may not work for all learning environments (K-12, corporate).
